"In the 1950s it was still fairly unusual and regarded as something special for “ordinary people” to be able to visit the United States. I had been appointed in 1955 to be a lecturer at St Peter’s College, the major seminary at Cardross, Dumbarton, where priests-to-be were trained. It gradually occurred to me that, with the seminary closed for six or seven weeks each summer, I had the opportunity of doing some serious travel."
He made further visits in the summers of 1960, 1962 and 1964. These visits were covered with more extensive photography and those pictures can be found on the following pages.
